How Matching Works

There are two components to this service: the Matching System and the Referral Service. First, you will complete a Patient Profile Questionnaire to quickly find open studies that are looking for patients with your profile (Matching). Second, our Clinical Trial Specialists will provide you with contact information for trials you have matched, answer your clinical trial questions, and make sure that you are able to reach the study coordinate for each trial match that interests you (Referral Service). You may walk through the entire process over the phone, or you may complete the Patient Profile Questionnaire on the website and then correspond with a Clinical Trial Specialist by phone or by email. Here are steps required to use this Clinical Trial Matching & Referral Service:

(1) Complete a Patient Profile

(2) Match to Clinical Trials

(3) Review Your Match Results

(4) Submit an Application

(5) Follow-up by our Clinical Trial Specialists

Complete a Patient Profile

To begin the matching process, complete a Patient Profile Questionnaire (click Create a Patient Profile ) for yourself, a loved one, or your patient.

The Patient Profile is a questionnaire that asks about a patient's diagnosis, condition, and treatment history. Additional questions will appear if some of the clinical trials in the database require additional information before determining whether your profile is a match to the trial. The answers to the additional questions are automatically stored in your questionnaire, which can be found anytime under Saved Patient Profiles.

You may always select "Not sure" as an answer. However, please be aware that the more information you provide, the greater your chances of matching to trials.

We encourage you to talk with your doctor or nurse to answer some of the detailed medical questions.

You can save, complete or update your Patient Profile at any time (Saved Patient Profiles). You can also delete your Patient Profile at any time (see Privacy Policy).

You may Contact Us by email or call our toll-free number at 1-800-584-9976 if you have questions about filling out the Patient Profile.

Match to Clinical Trials

After completing or updating a Patient Profile, click the "Continue" button. This step saves your answers and presents our Disclaimer. The purpose of this Disclaimer is to make sure that all users of the Clinical Trial Matching & Referral Service understand the following:

(a) This service is not a substitute for medical advice from your physician.

(b) This service is intended for use by people over the age of 18.

(c) This service is intended to help you quickly identify possible clinical trial options, but it is not a complete prescreening.

We cannot promise that you will be accepted into any clinical trial. The final determination to accept you into a clinical trial can only be made by the physician conducting the clinical trial, and this determination will only be made after this physician reviews your medical records, conducts a complete physical examination of you during a "screening visit", and determines that the results of your screening visit confirm that you are eligible for the study and that it is safe to give you the study treatments. In addition, the study team must explain to you the known risks and benefits of participating in the clinical trial, and you must voluntarily agree to participate by signing the “Informed Consent” document. Please remember that you may leave a clinical trial at any time.

Once you accept the "Disclaimer," your answers on the Patient Profile are compared to the preliminary enrollment criteria of each clinical trial loaded into the database. You will see a list of open clinical trials that are looking for patients with the characteristics of the profile you submitted along with the cities and states in which these trials are available.

Note: If you are searching for clinical trials through the Florida Clinical Trial Matching Service, you will be shown trial matches in Florida. If you are searching for clinical trials through a specific Florida cancer center, then you will be shown trial matches available at that cancer center. If you wish to see trial matches from more cancer centers, or more states, please ask your Clinical Trial Specialist to expand your search.

Each profile you create, along with the match results, is stored automatically under Saved Patient Profiles.

Review Your Match Results

We strongly encourage you to review your match results with a trusted doctor to determine which of the clinical trials, if any, might be appropriate for you. You may want to contact the study coordinator associated with a trial that interests you PRIOR to sharing the information with your doctor to learn more about the study and the likelihood that you will be eligible. You may also wish to talk with other patients or a patient advocacy organization and our Clinical Trial Specialists can help connect you with other resources. Remember: Deciding to participate in a clinical trial is your choice.

Submit an Application

To receive contact information for any clinical trial matches that interest you, we ask you to provide us with your phone number and/or e-mail address. We will also ask you for permission to contact you (see our Privacy Policy). This step is considered an “application” and it merely signals to EmergingMed that you have interest in one or more of your trial matches and that you would like more information. Remember that you are never obligated to pursue a clinical trial found through this or any other service.

If you prefer not to provide your contact information online, then we ask you to call us at 1-800-584-9976 and we will give you the contact information for your trial matches over the phone.

Follow-up by our Clinical Trial Specialists

With your permission, a Clinical Trial Specialist will contact you by telephone or by e-mail (whichever you request) to verify your application, provide more information about the clinical trial, give you the trial coordinator's contact information, and review the steps you will need to take to learn more about the study.

Since we do not share your contact information, it will be your responsibility to call the study coordinator to learn more about the study, and if appropriate, schedule a first appointment for a screening visit. Our Clinical Trial Specialists can help if you are having trouble reaching the study coordinator. You can call them toll-free 1-800-584-9976.

We find that patients typically have more questions about clinical trials as their search continues. Therefore, our Clinical Trial Specialists will follow-up with you, with your permission, to answer your questions (or refer you to someone who can answer your questions) and to make sure that you able to reach the study coordinators. The feedback you provide about the process you go through to explore clinical trials, and the decisions you make, help us to improve our service and enable us to make suggestions to cancer centers, trial sponsors, and state and federal officials as to how they might improve their part of the cancer clinical trial system.
